vs. Cranio-Sacral Therapy

Many people have questions about the differences between an osteopath practicing cranial technique and a cranio-sacral therapist. Here is a table which outlines some of the differences.

Osteopathy Cranio-Sacral
Training 4 years of medical school followed by 3 years of residency with at least one 40-hour course in cranial treatment As little as 3 days of training
Scope of practice Fully licensed physician qualified to diagnose and treat any medical condition Not legally qualified to diagnose or treat any medical conditions
Method of treatment May utilize any type of Osteopathic technique which is appropriate, from cranial treatment to muscle energy to thrusting techniques Limited to cranio-sacral treatment, or other techniques based on other training (ie. physical therapy, massage)

There are many well-meaning cranio-sacral therapists out there who have wonderful hands and a good sense of touch. However, without the training in osteopathic philosophy and application they are not able to provide the full range of therapeutic options that a DO can. For more information about OCF you can visit the Cranial Academy or the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation.
